Clumsy, Careless, Fall, Mistake, Oops

When you hear blunder in parenting, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Do you think that making blunders as a parent is permitted in parenting? As a parent, did you know that you will make some wrong decisions at some point in time? What you need to understand is that it is okay to commit some errors as a parent but what should not be tolerated is you actually making frequent errors that have a negative impact in the life of your child.

So what are the common blunders you need to avoid as a parent? What are those mistakes that parents make today that have a negative implication in the life of a child? Below are some of them:

  1. Over-protection: It is the responsibility of every child to ensure that their child feels safe and protected. Every parent owes it to their child to keep them safe but it becomes extreme when you begin to “over-do” things. When you begin to make every decision for them, choose their friends, places they visit and everything they wear, then you fall a victim of being overprotective. One of the adverse effects of overprotecting is that it makes a child feel insecure which can render them helpless now and in the future.
  2. Verbal abuse: Some parents have made it a habit to be fast with words when their children make mistakes. Most times, these words are not chosen properly and they usually tend to have the power to hurt the emotional feelings of a child. To some parents, “I never beat or punish my child” but unknown to them how much hurt and damage their spoken words have on their child. As a parent, it is very important that you are equally able to control your tongue as you can your temper.
  3. Physical abuse: One of the worst blunders you can make as a parent is to think that beating your child or giving them severe punishment is the best approach to correct your child. More than ever, children are smarter…they listen and they understand. Rather than taking the rash approach, a pep talk would do more good than several strokes of a cane. “Spare the rod and spoil the child” should never be an excuse for you to resort to always flogging your child for any and every mistake they make.
